The Qualification Routes
There are two major routes to obtain the CGNA an CIMA credentials. One route follows a periodic examination routine while the other route allows an accelerated route. None of them are easier or r=tougher than the other. They follow different methods to judge competence. They may also have different entry requirements.
Traditional Route

The Traditional Exam Route (also called the Self-Tailored Learning and Assessment Route) is the classic pathway to obtaining the CIMA qualification and the CGMA designation. Under this route, students study individual subjects and sit separate examinations at each stage of the qualification.
The Professional Qualification is organised into three levels:
| Level | Focus |
|---|---|
| Operational Level | Managing day-to-day financial activities and business operations |
| Management Level | Business performance management and decision-making |
| Strategic Level | Strategy, risk management, and leadership |
At each level there are three objective examinations and one integrated case study paper.
Flagship Route

The CGMA Finance Leadership Program (FLP) provides an alternative pathway to the traditional exam route. Instead the path provides online self-paced learning, continuous assessment, subscription-based pricing, and multiple entry points based on prior qualifications and exemptions
Students follow the same competency framework and ultimately earn the same CGMA designation as those following the traditional pathway.
The FLP operates on an annual subscription model which generally includes:
- Access to the FLP learning platform
- Learning materials
- Competency assessments
- Registration and membership support
- Case Study preparation resources
- Case Study exam credits in many package structures
This differs from the traditional route, where students usually pay separately for tuition, registration, and each examination
Which route is better for you?
It depends on your circumstances. Here is a comparative table to help you in making a decision. Importantly, both routes lead to exactly the same qualification, professional status, and CGMA designation. Employers do not distinguish between candidates based on the route used to achieve the qualification.
| Feature | FLP | Traditional Route |
|---|---|---|
| Learning Method | Fully digital and self-paced | Self-study or tuition-based |
| Objective Tests | Not required | Required |
